The Rum Runner
Airstream bar design, 2017
Established cocktail making service, The Rum Runner, commissioned Steph Gallia to design a brand new mobile bar in a 22ft 1961 Tradewind Airstream.
The concept was developed through an understanding of the client’s bar style and approach to cocktail making. Whilst very lightly playing on Art Deco style and speakeasies of the 1920s, the design also aims to resonate with the automotive style of 1960s Airstream culture.
Challenged with how to bring a real bar atmosphere to any context, the design aspires to take trailer hatch service to a new level. When open, the delight of the interior is revealed, creating a treat for the eye and an unexpected spectacle for the viewer.
To contrast with the iconic cool exterior of the Airstream, warm materials and rich colours were introduced to the interior. A golden glow is drawn through continuous fluid lines of brass from deep inside the display cabinets out to the fishmouth lanterns illuminating the bar.
